Role of Short Chain Branching in Crystalline Model Polyethylenes

The role of short chain branches (SCBs) (C4H9) on the melt and crystalline properties monodisperse polyethylene systems (C400H802) is investigated, using molecular dynamics simulations a coarse-grained united-monomer model that represents chemical monomer as one particle. A method introduced, whereby SCBs are grown out linear backbone to minimize computational expense. Here, this concept proven by introducing differing numbers (Nb = 0, 1, 2, 4, 10, 20) regularly spaced along backbones studying their influence properties. By growing into phase, it demonstrated they marginally perturb original topology, justifying relatively equilibration time after growth. Upon crystallization, however, each system’s behavior differs considerably. Cooling heating cycles performed study crystallization melting at progressively slower rates. morphology observed depend strongly both cooling rate number backbone. In particular, lamella thickness decreases systematically with faster increasing SCB content. At highest branch content, per 20 carbons 20), almost entirely suppressed, whereas small allows control over average lamellar thickness. This observation, combined prudent for equilibrating SCBs, opens up opportunities more complex architectures mimic industrial morphologies.
